Even though the full moon hadnât yet passed, and she wasnât fully healed, Kyra was ready to leave the seclusion of the cabin and return to the pitiful trailer she called home. Unfortunately, the weather plotted against her. Sleet beat the windows and obscured the forest. Meanwhile, she was stuck inside with quiet Ross, hostile Thea, and Mikos.
Mikos, the furnace that heated her side even as she watched the outside world through ice beaten glass. Heâd fallen asleep next to where she sat cross-legged on her mattress. The confinement had made him restless, and heâd paced until he was worn out.
Confusion led her to absurd daydreams. That they could run away together. That he didnât care if she wasnât a wolf.
Two nights had passed since theyâd touched and kissed. They hadnât spoken about of it. Theyâd cleaned in the rain and pretended nothing happened, but there was no keeping such a secret.
Thea had started in on them the moment theyâd returned. She could smell their disobedience and was predictably vocal about her thoughts of it.
With every argument, Mikos grew more distant from Kyra. Though he still watched her and helped her with her bandages, there was a wall between them. Even now, even if he was right next to her, she could feel it. Amazing how much could fall apart in two nights.
She suspected the only reason he stayed close now was to prove a point in his disagreement with Thea. He didnât want to say he was in the wrong.
The house creaked, and a knock on the open doorway stirred her from her meandering thoughts. Ross stood staring at her for a moment. His brow quirked, and he glanced to Mikos, who still slept.
âMikos,â Ross called gruffly.
Mikos shot up, running a hand through his hair. He scrambled from the mattress. âYes?â
Ross waved his hand, indicating to follow, but said nothing.
The door closed behind them, and Kyra left her makeshift bed. Eyes searching nothingness, she leaned against the chilly window, ready to escape her situation. She grew bored of watching the obscured scene, however, and collapsed back to the mattress. Reaching under the pillow, she found her book. She couldnât remember where sheâd last stopped, so she turned to a random page and began reading.
After only a few chapters she grew tired, but as she put it away, a knock sounded on the door. It had to be Mikos, but part of her wanted to pretend to already be sleeping.
âCome in.â
He entered holding a small jar sheâd come to know well. Although Thea clearly didnât want Kyra around, she was still contributing her knowledge of healing.
âI thought we were beyond this,â Kyra mumbled.
Mikos didnât answer, only helped her lift her shirt to expose the wide span of bandages. She thought of her home while he pulled the white gauze and wrappings from her. Sheâd have to do this on her own, soon, back home. Unless Ross was correct, and the moon would boost her healing.
Still, she looked away while he spread sticky brown salve over her stomach.
